چکیده

Minimization techniques are commonly adopted methodologies for retrieving a 3D surface starting from its shaded representation (image), i.e. for solving the widely known shape from shading (SFS) problem. Unfortunately, depending on the imaged object to be reconstructed, retrieved surfaces often results to be completely different from the expected ones. In recent years, a number of interactive methods have been explored with the aim of improving surface reconstruction; however, since most of these methods require user interaction performed on a tentative reconstructed surface which often is significantly different from the desired one, it is advisable to increase the quality of the surface, to be further processed, as much as possible. Inspired by such techniques, the present work describes a new method for interactive retrieving of shaded object surface. The proposed approach is meant to recover the expected surface by using easy-to-set boundary conditions, so that the human-computer interaction primarily takes place prior to the surface retrieval. The method, tested on a set of case studies, proves to be effective in achieving sufficiently accurate reconstruction of scenes with both front and side illumination.

Surface Reconstruction from Disparate Shading: An Integration of Shape-from-Shading and Stereopsis

A cooperative integration of stereopsis and shapefrom-shading is presented. The integration makes the process of 3-d surface reconstruction better constrained and more reliable. It also obviates the need for surface boundary conditions, and explicit information about the surface albedo and the light source direction, which can now be estimated in an iterative manner.

Use of Multiple Surface Normal Approximations in the Shape-from-Shading Using Jacobi’s Iterative Method

We previously showed that the shape-from-shading algorithm using Jacobi’s iterative method is promising in terms of accuracy and simplicity. In this paper we investigate the effects of approximations of the surface normal on the shape estimating process. Specifically the four different simplest approximations are shown to give four different reconstruction functions of shape, which are compleme...

3D-spline reconstruction using shape from shading: Spline from shading

In this work, we describe an original method of solving the shape from shading (SFS) problem, which relies on the marriage of two simple ideas. On the one hand, we propose to modelize the scene by a parametric surface, namely a 3D-spline. The key advantage is that boundary conditions are no longer required to render the problem well-posed. On the other hand, we introduce the concept of ‘‘useful...

A general framework for three-dimensional surface reconstruction by self-consistent fusion of shading and shadow features

In this paper a novel framework for three-dimensional surface reconstruction by self-consistent fusion of shading and shadow features is presented. Based on the analysis of at least two pixel-synchronous images of the scene under different illumination conditions, this framework combines a shape from shading approach for estimating surface gradients and altitude variations on small scales with ...
